Trey Connor - Horizons
Trey Connor is a modern indie artist who utilizes elements of both alternative and pop rock to make his sound unique. Originally from Michigan but currently residing in Austin, TX, Connor has participated in multiple music endeavors – including being a casting finalist on season 10 of The Voice – during his rise to solo prominence. Today, June 12, 2020, he is releasing his new album, Horizons.
Horizons starts out strong with its lead track, “Fear”, a song full of passion that serves as a strong teaser of things to come; “Lost in You”, the second track, continues the momentum presented by the lead track. “The Emptiness” from later in the album serves as the album’s heaviest song and features skillful guitar work and an impassioned vocal delivery. These three songs capture energy and movement that I imagine would translate well to live concert performances and do a great job of setting the tone in their respective parts of the album.
“Heavy to Hold”, “Happy Town” and “Diamonds to Dust” slow things down a bit but further emphasize the passion that Connor put into this album while highlighting his singing capabilities; I found “Heavy to Hold” particularly captivating and Connor’s partner in the song Kimberly Underwood also shines on the track with both of their harmonies producing a rich and pleasant vocal texture.
“The Way You Move” is definitely a standout song, its upbeat sound reminiscent of bands like Walk the Moon’s more popular singles. This really leaves me with the impression that this song would play well while listening to the radio during a long road trip. The same holds true for the anthemic “We Are” that concludes the album; every piece on the album builds well to the album’s final moments in this track and it is a great display of Trey Connor’s skill as a musician.
Overall, Horizons reverberates powerfully, giving us a glimpse into the talent, passion and musical diversity that Trey Connor provides. The album features crisp and clean production, expert arrangement and heart-filled lyrics; Horizons serves as a brilliant triumph in the young career of Trey Connor.
