Nicholas E. Ballen - Sonata in G Minor, Op.7

Nicholas E. Ballen is an American music composer who is currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Born and raised in Washington D.C., Nicholas is a mostly self-taught composer who enjoys crafting Classical compositions. Today we are excited to share our thoughts on Nicholas E. Ballen’s latest work, “Sonata in G Minor, Op.7”, with featured pianist Haley Myles!

“Sonata in G Minor, Op. 7” opens with its brisk Allegretto section, its fast-paced melodies telling a story throughout its ten minute duration. The prevailing melody provides a mix of emotion that kept me coming back for more; feelings of wonder, splendor and even some mystique and mystery were what I found within. Things slow down as the piece progresses into its Andante section and I think it is in the intricate melodies on display here what we experience the true genius of Nicholas E. Ballen’s composition skills. This section feels like almost as if it were a living, breathing work - I really enjoy the note spacing and articulation utilized here and the emotional impact that is left as a result. This piece’s Rondo section closes everything out with its mixed melodies providing an overall frantic soundscape. The melodic work here is timely and relevant, closing the piece on a high note while reflecting on emotions from previous moments in the piece perfectly.

I do not know where Nicholas E. Ballen drew inspiration for “Sonata in G Minor, Op.7” from but I do know, like any well-crafted Classical piano composition, there is a lot for the listener to unpack and enjoy from both a technical and emotional perspective, making it a truly delightful experience for current Classical enjoyers as well as people who are new to exploring the genre.
