A-D-M-T - Jams
A-D-M-T is a multi-instrumentalist music producer from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Today we get take a look at his debut solo EP Jams as well as get to know this great young producer with an interview!
Jams is a 4 track EP with a run time of a little more than 10 minutes. The first track “Tesnus” does a great job of setting the mood of the album with its funky jazz-inspired groove; the track is very funky and has an infectiously catchy sound to it. “Kind of J” has a bouncier beat to it and the saxophone steals the show throughout this song - the song as a whole reminds me of taking a walk just as the sun starts to set. “Weird Flex” and “Go Far” both continue that summer type of vibe and both of those songs transport me back to summers from my childhood relaxing on summer vacation. Jams is extremely easy to vibe to and A-D-M-T’s calm but expressive instrumental phrasing gives each of the songs their own unique flavor. I truly groove from start to finish while listening to Jams. and I find A-D-M-T’s style to be quite refreshing.
After listening to Jams a couple of times I sent A-D-M-T some questions that I had about his music career and experiences writing his debut EP. Those questions and A-D-M-T’s answers are below, along with some final thoughts at the end of the article!
How long have you been writing/recording music? Can you tell me a bit about your previous experiences and the work you do with other musicians?
“I started playing music way back when I was 4 in music school, but I only started writing and recording music a lot later about 7 years ago, when I was 16. I had an indie-rock band at that time and we wanted to have some kind of recordings of the songs we were playing, and I’ve always been interested in the production side of music as well, so I started recording at home with some very basic gear. Of course those first recordings sounded extremely amateur but it was my first step towards becoming a producer. I started doing freelance music production (mostly pop and rock projects) about 3 years ago with different artists here and there, but last year I started feeling like I wanted to have a regular group of artists I can work with, which is why I started my own indie record label Adam Toth Records at the beginning of 2020. Since then I have 6 artists that I am currently working with (I record/produce, mix, master and release their work) at the same time, but I’m still looking for more upcoming talents to record and manage.”
This is your first solo EP that you have released. What made you decide to start up a solo project?
“I was spending a lot of time at home during the quarantine period and had a lot of ideas that I wanted to gather into a collection of songs. Since I was staying inside for weeks I had the time to jam and improvise, write chord progressions and experiment with drum patterns. Before releasing my next solo project that will have vocals as well and will be more on the pop side of music, I wanted to have these instrumental ideas collected on an EP so I can show off my other side in production and songwriting.”
What was your inspiration for this EP? Were there any artists or experiences that directly influenced you during your recording process?
“I listened to the instrumentals of a bunch of different R&B/Soul artists like Masego, FKJ, and Gray which all inspired me to write smooth, jazzy chord progressions, but all of the songs on the EP are actually inspired by one improvised element that I recorded earlier at some point and then started building a song around them. I also wanted to record smooth and calming music for people to listen to, since the world definitely went a bit crazy during the past few months.”
What kind of emotional and instrumental themes were you trying to convey throughout the EP?
“Since the just started at the time of the release, I wanted to deliver a calm summer evening vibe with the songs. My goal was to make the listener feel like sitting outside by the pool, watching the sunset, not worrying about anything at all.”
I find your music easy to vibe to and I bet it would translate well to a live setting. Have you ever done any live shows? Do you have any plans to do live shows after the COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease?
“I have not played these songs at any live shows yet, but once it becomes easier to organise live appearances I would definitely like to have a few. I am going to work on the stripped down, 3- musician (drums, keys, bass/guitar) versions of the songs until then!”
Is there anything else you would like Which Coast readers to know about you or your music?
“I feel like this EP can be considered as my introduction as a solo artist, sort of a first stepping stone towards a more popular direction that will still have my signature calm R&B vibe in them. I want to combine music that is groovy and simple, but still instrumentally creative, and I am really looking forward to my next release as well, so people can see my development as an artist.”
After having talked to A-D-M-T about his EP, I better understand what his intentions were while writing these songs and I appreciate his work on Jams more than I already did during my initial listening. Although this is A-D-M-T’s first solo effort, his skills as a musician and producer are evident throughout the EP as he displays excellent and clean production with the right amount of polish on all of his tracks. I truly believe that the tracks A-D-M-T shared here are outstanding and easy to vibe to; these songs would go great on a study playlist or could simply help you chill out and relax - this is the kind of calming music that I think everyone could stand to listen to right now. A-D-M-T definitely nailed the “calm summer evening” vibe he was going for!
