Joe McCann - Dwell
Joe McCann is a musician currently located in Upstate New York; his style is drawn from “the melodic, rhythmic, ambient, and evocative” according to his Facebook page. McCann specializes in instrumental music driven by his skills as a multi-instrumentalist. “Dwell” is a single from McCann’s album Chase the Sunset and the subject of today’s review.
Coming in at four minutes and thirty seconds, “Dwell” starts off with a catchy drum beat as the rest of the instruments slowly play their way in. Instrumentally, the song seems to draw influence from a great variety of genres; I hear a lot of jazz elements mixed in with some rock and alt-rock sensibility that give the track a unique and lasting resonance. The guitar is the driving force throughout the song, providing a very airy and lasting melody.
Overall, I found “Dwell” to be a very tactfully written piece of music. McCann’s subtlety helps make the song easy to listen to while doing a variety of activities; I think it would be great to listen to while going for a walk or while writing. I tend to get some Old West vibes from the song, it kind of sounds like something you might hear in a Western movie.
