Charlie Christmas - Pandemic Drinking Song (Empty So Fast)

Charlie Christmas is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who records and writes all of his songs for his solo career by himself. In addition to his solo music, Christmas has also performed as a member of several bands, ranging from “the illustrious to the unlistenable”. Like the rest of us, Charlie Christmas’ life has been impacted by the pandemic; today we take a listen to his new track “Pandemic Drinking Song (Empty So Fast)”.

“Pandemic Drinking Song (Empty So Fast)” seems to be a modern take on folk music, featuring an acoustic guitar, banjo, occasional piano, harmonica and light percussion, but also featuring a groovy bassline and even some electric guitar; it seems like Christmas gathered the best of 60’s and 70’s music into one track and added enough modern polish to make this track feel simultaneously old and contemporary. Lyrically, Christmas describes his alcohol use during the pandemic, including the clever line “there’s no room in the cupboard, no room in the recycling bin/but here I am standing in the liquor aisle again”. By describing alcohol use in a humorous way, this track gave some much-needed levity to the COVID-19 Pandemic and all of its negative sides - toward the end of the track, Christmas even rattles some empty bottles together which garnered an audible laugh out of me during my first listen.

At the end of the day, “Pandemic Drinking Song (Empty So Fast)” makes for a good drinking song or even one to just kick back and relax to. The track showcases both Christmas’ humor and skill as a musician and I definitely appreciate this track a great deal.
