D.U.Nx.G. - Evolution
D.U.Nx.G. (D.U. Next Generation) is the next generation version of the classic Oakland-based group Digital Underground. This revival features the original drummer Jimi “Chopmaster J” Dright and his son, M.C., who fronts the group and serves as producer and songwriter. Today we are excited to cover D.U.Nx.G.’s single, “Evolution”, which was released about a year ago on August 25, 2020.
“Evolution” successfully combines classic hip-hop effort with modern sensibilities that fit right in with the modern rap game. The interplay between the lo-fi influenced backing track and the rap vocals is absolutely brilliant, providing a unique focus and leaving quite a strong impression. In its sub-three-minute runtime, “Evolution” provides so much punch that it left me feeling borderline speechless after my first couple of listens. I felt myself fully embracing the future of D.U.Nx.G. while listening to “Evolution”, and this track absolutely hits hard in all the best ways.
What I enjoy most about “Evolution” is the way it bridges the previous approaches of Digital Underground with the modern D.U.Nx.G. group’s sound. This track is special in a lot of ways and I feel as though it is an absolute can’t-miss kind of hip-hop track.
