Half Cashed House Band - Loveline

Half Cashed House Band is a comedy rock band. Self-proclaimed “legends in the making”, this group creates uniquely entertaining music full of wit, humor and creativity in a way that could truly live up to the “legend” status they pursue. Today we take a listen to their new EP, Loveline, crafted to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a way that only Half Cashed House Band could make.

Kicking off the five-track EP is “Be Mine, Valentine”. This song does an excellent job of starting the EP off in a way that is indicative of what is still to come. “Be Mine, Valentine” is delightfully crude, featuring an over-the-top vocal performance - matched by the entertaining lyrics - that really seals the satirical nature of the track and EP. The degree of showmanship featured on this song is remarkable and its ability to set the tone of the EP makes it a perfect lead track.

Second from Loveline is “Hot Mess Magnet” and it keeps the humor flowing. This number features a brilliant mixture of self-depreciation (by the titular “Hot Mess Magnet” narrating his magnetism for undesirable women) and a strong dose loathing for the women he attracts. “Hot Mess Magnet” has a very catchy vocal melody that is absolutely infectious, giving the listener even more reason to pay attention to the already attention-grabbing lyrics.

Next up is “Church Going' Girl” which parodies the vibe of classic 50’s and early 60’s pop ballads in an extremely fun way. The lyrics are more of what you would expect as the singer attempts to seduce the titular church going girl and enter through “[her] backdoor”. This mid-tempo track is the perfect middle piece for Loveline in the way it segues into the rest of the EP. I really enjoyed this one for its spot-on impersonation of those oldschool pop ballads and the delightfully subversive nature of the lyrics.

“Deadbeat Boyfriend” comes in fourth, giving off the strongest rock vibe of the EP while giving off some skate-punk style energy. Seemingly less over-the-top than most of the rest of the EP, I found this song quite relatable; most of us have been in a spot where we have feelings for someone while they are wasting their time with someone who deserves less. In that regard, this track reminds me of blink-182’s classic, “Dysentery Gary”, giving off that same strong “fuck you” type of energy in an enjoyable package.

Closing Loveline out is “Dick Pic” and I cannot think of a better title choice to end things off. Featuring perhaps my favorite instrumental track on the EP, “Dick Pic” is absolutely delightful, especially in regards to its guitar and bass work. What gets me most about this song is how straight the lyrics seem to be played, adding another layer to the dramatic vibe which serves only to boost the humor up another level. “Dick Pic” is an excellent finisher for this EP, really representing the vibe and meaning all of the songs on this EP went for throughout its duration.

Loveline is full of over-the-top performances and humorous moments, filled to the brim with vulgarity and memorable moments of wit. I can definitely recommend this EP to anyone who has a negative view of Valentine’s day (and its nature as a corporate manufactured holiday) or anyone who recently went through a breakup and just might not be in the mood for this holiday this year.
