Hethensun - Beach w/Interview

Heathensun is a band that combines metal, punk and hip-hop to create a one of a kind sound. The group is made up of some colorfully named members: Johnny Anthrax, Drunkndonuts and Heathen who work together to craft equally colorful songs. Today we are excited to share our review of Hethensun’s single, “Beach”, which hit #7 on the U.S. iTunes charts, as well as our interview with vocalist Johnny Anthrax!

“Beach” is a high-octane fusion of some of the best aspects of punk, metal and hip-hop, showcasing the electrifying style of Hethensun. The vocals in this track simply awesome; Johnny Anthrax’s hip-hop style hits kind of like a smack in the face - in a good way - with a style that reminds me of early Beastie Boys. Drunkndonuts’ guitar performance is also incredibly tasteful, setting the tone of the track in a very exciting way. Overall, “Beach” comes exactly as advertised, chocked full of pulse-pounding energy and plenty of fun.

Now let’s dive into the interview with Johnny Anthrax!

In your opinion, what’s the biggest milestone for the band since you started out?

The beginning, when Drunkndonuts reached out after years and was like, “Hey, you wanna write music again?”. And I was like, Hel yeah I do! Next thing you know, BOOM!, here we are making music and livin the dream.

Do you have a typical songwriting process?

DnD sends me masterpieces of art, that I mistake as music, psssshh what do I know? Lol Anyway, you can pick up on the vibe, the emotion of the track. I find that, get in that state of mind, and let the fates take it from there.

What was the biggest challenge in making these songs?

Long distance relationship with DnD. I wake up, roll over and want to record, but alas. I can only see that mask and hear those tunes via the internet…sad. “I would walk 500 miles to record a song at your door, ba duh duh” Or however that song goes.

Your new song “BEACH” has a lot of messages and underlying themes. What was the inspiration for it?

Hahaha, yeah…nope. Just going to uh, not…touch…that one.

Is there an overall message you’re trying to get across with your music?

I’ve lived my life by one quote, and I feel it’s kept me sane and youthful. So I try to convey that message in my lyrics.

“Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, and do whatever you want all the time, you could miss it.” - Eric Cartman

Any plans to do a video at the moment?

We just had an amazing animated video made for Jealousy. There are plans for a Monster video coming up in the near future. We start filming the end of August. I don’t know if I was supposed to leak that info or not, but don’t tell DnD, and we should be good.

After the interview, it is more clear where Heathensun and Johnny Anthrax are coming from with their music. The Eric Cartman quote that Johnny Anthrax lives by, though perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek, definitely comes through in the lyrics he writes and it pairs incredibly well with the electrifying overall sound Heathensun produces. You can keep up with Heathensun through Facebook, Instagram and their website. Make sure to check out “Beach” on Apple Music as well as your favorite streaming sites!
