Nick Sumner and the Assistance - Look Out Below
Nick Sumner and the Assistance is a rock band helmed by guitarist/vocalist Nick Sumner. Citing artists such as Jeff Buckley, Tom Waits, Foo Fighters and Stone Temple Pilots as influences, this group brings a great deal of melody to their 90’s influenced sound. Today we check out Nick Sumner and the Assistance’s song, “Look Out Below”.
“Look Out Below” is a showcase of emotions and how Nick Sumner and the Assistance represent them in their music. Sumner’s vocals are melodic and soul-filled - truly driving the song - and the vocal performance as a whole is spirited and emotive. I found that the drums did an excellent job of carrying the instrumental track, teaming with bass to drive the rhythm section in a noticeable way. A guitar solo towards the end of the track briefly steals the spotlight from the vocals and ties the emotive energy of the song together in a strikingly meaningful way before leading back into the chorus to close out the track.
“Look Out Below” is a song that strongly reminds me of 90’s and early 00’s rock - no surprise given the band’s influences - and I was left feeling nostalgic for music from that time after listening for the first time. Nick Sumner and the Assistance is a band that does an excellent job of taking music that sounds familiar and putting their own spin on things and “Look Out Below” is a great example of their style.
