Phantom Phunk - A Week Ago
Phantom Phunk is a songwriting project based out of Tampa studio Harmonic Factory. The group develops their music in a way that incorporates many genres and often features guest vocalists and producers; this unique mixture of music spans “from psychedelic rock to cloud rap”, according to their website and after checking out a few of their tracks, I definitely see what they mean. I was recently given the opportunity to review their soon to be released track “A Week Ago”, due out on June 25th, 2020.
“A Week Ago” manages to be both exactly what I expected from Phantom Phunk as well as something surprising; the song features rap with a psychedelic/blues influenced instrumental track somewhat reminiscent of old school hip hop and I was deeply impressed by how well the rap lyrics flow and how well the mix of genres form to create a rich multi-layer backing track. It is easy to tell that “A Week Ago” is a track crafted by creative and technically proficient artists who know how to hold their listeners’ attention. This is the kind of song that makes you want to dig deeper into a group’s discography and I will surely do that with Phantom Phunk in the near future.
