Piotr Sobolczyk - GotHarmonies

Piotr Sobolczyk is a music composer and producer from Kraków, Poland. Sobolczyk has previously created IDM/electronica music, though this music featured a great deal of variety and influences, making IDM more of an umbrella term to describe Sobolczyk’s music. Today we take a dive into Piotr Sobolczyk’s new EP, GotHarmonies, which features neoclassical inspired/infused cinematic songs.

Leading off GotHarmonies is “GothaMetropolis”. This track is mischievous, sinister and features somewhat dystopian vibes throughout most of its duration. A brief few moments that inspire hope are drowned out by the darkness within this track and it truly kicks off the EP in an intriguing way. Up next is “Le Blues du Cafard”, which to me has a distinct duality that makes the track extremely interesting; on one hand, there are certain moments that contain melancholy but during others a sense of wonder prevails. This duality made this track my most listened to while writing this review as it kept me coming back to try and learn more about its overall motif. “Virus Variations, Mutiny Mutations” is the third track from the EP and it begins with a triumphant, though slightly foreboding organ sound. About a minute and a half in, though, the track diverges from its initial course with variations and mutations in melody fitting the title of the track very well. These first three tracks show the ingenuity of Piotr Sobolczyk and present excellent cinematic experiences.

The fourth track from GotHarmonies is “Unfulfeelment Madrigal”. I found this track to be the most enticing during my first listening session for this EP as its lush textures and complex melodic structure make it a real gem of a neoclassical song. This one really painted a picture in my mind and I kept coming back to it as a result. Following “Unfulfeelment Madrigal” is “Lonely As a Solo” which, to me, had a very strong and complete nature to it. At times this song is frantic and at others it comes off as dreary and, well, lonely. I really admire the work that the strings section is putting in throughout this song, really driving the track forward and carrying much of the emotional burden. Closing out GotHarmonies is “HarmoHydrony”, which powerfully closes the book on this EP. I found this track to be the most emotionally stirring, with the music hitting home and telling a story. Throughout these latter three tracks, we are treated to powerful moments full of vibrancy and character, expertly orchestrated by Piotr Sobolczyk.

Richly cinematic and massively appealing, GotHarmonies provides powerful imagery through its splendid composition and production. Piotr Sobolczyk is a very talented individual and GotHarmonies was composed, orchestrated, mixed and mastered solely by this talented artist. We have GotHarmonies embedded below and also be sure to check out the track’s YouTube playlist with videos that accompany the music in a meaningful way. The EP is also available on Bandcamp, so no matter where you listen, be sure to give Piotr Sobolczyk some love!
