The Buddha Visions - Fall Away
The Buddha Visions is an alternative rock project that draws from Buddhist tradition. Inspired by artists and bands like The Divine Comedy, Scott Walker, Radiohead and David Bowie, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Luis looks to tackle elements of both light and dark through the music released under The Buddha Visions name. Today we dive into Fall Away, the new EP from Luis and The Buddha Visions.
“Countdown” is the lead track and really sets the table for the entirety of Fall Away. Through this track you can hear plenty of Luis’ influences, especially elements reminiscent of Radiohead’s earlier, more melodic radio-friendly days as well as some David Bowie. I also really appreciated the way the outro seals the track in your memory, peacefully yet emotively closing the track. The EP’s title track, “Fall Away” is up second and its sonic vibrancies are reminiscent of many 90s alt rock bands but there are some elements that feel even Beatles-esque in terms of melodic structure; the track also features a haunting guitar that feels as if it is speaking into your soul. It makes perfect sense that the EP shares a name with this track because this one stands out as a true hit.
“Outland” is the middle track from Fall Away and it is probably my personal favorite from the EP. Featuring some more electronic sounding elements compared to the previous tracks, this song stands out for its somewhat subdued but still melodic verses that build into a wonderfully fleshed out chorus. Of all of the tracks on this EP, “Outland” stands out as exceptional from a production standpoint alone, with its many layers adding a strong feeling of intrigue that left me quite captivated. This track really feels like a masterclass on how to write a track that sucks the listener in and then keeps that attention throughout.
Following “Outland” is “Mirror”, which really slows things down with a quite introspective vibe. This song feels very bluesy in nature and what I appreciated most was the way that the bassline carried the song; the rhythm section shines in this one for sure. The blend between classic genres and a unique/modern approach that Luis seems to be going for comes out strong in this track, seamlessly sounding like a fusion of blues, alt-rock and something else new and unique. “Yes to Everything” closes out Fall Away and it is the only instrumental track on the EP. Despite its lack of vocals, the track displays just as much emotion as the other four songs, giving off an inspiring feeling. Of all of the tracks on the EP, this track has the strongest instrumental portion - fitting because it is only an instrumental - and I found its melodic instrumentation to be a very fitting way to close out the EP.
Fall Away is a powerful and captivating project that will leave you wanting to listen on repeat to re-analyze what you just heard. This EP succeeds in tackling Luis’ goal of showing off both light and dark elements and we are provided with an exceptionally enjoyable listening experience as a result. I cannot wait to see what Luis and The Buddha Visions do next - but for now we have an absolutely brilliant EP to digest and enjoy.
